The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is now official after much tease, leak, and rumour, and one thing this phone does not disguise is its photography goals. Observe the enormous camera module on the back!

This oversized camera setup has a good reason behind it in addition to just seeming big. The new Sony IMX989 image sensor, which happens to be the largest camera sensor made especially for smartphones, is initially found on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. In the future, it’s anticipated to appear in numerous more phones, but this particular Xiaomi gadget is the first to do so. You can see its actual dimensions and how it dwarfs what was formerly thought to be a large object in the camera section below.

Therefore, it is evident that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra seeks to revolutionize the smartphone photography industry, but it also functions as a true flagship powerhouse. It boasts the fastest RAM memory and storage, the best Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor, and, of course, a large and stunning 6.7-inch OLED screen.

The three rear cameras are housed in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera system, which is a sizable circle on the back of the device. The new primary shooter is in the centre and, as you can see, it appears to be much larger than the others. An ultra-wide camera is to the left, and a periscope camera with a 5X zoom is below the primary camera.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera specs:

  • 50MP wide camera, 23mm, f/1.9 aperture, 1″ sensor (Sony IMX989)
  • 48MP ultra-wide camera, 13mm, f/2.2 aperture, 1/2″ sensor (IMX586)
  • 48MP 5.2X zoom camera, 120mm, f/4.1, 1/2″ sensor (IMX586)
The secret ingredient to the camera magic sauce that Xiaomi has cooked up is the Sony IMX989 1″ sensor.

Due to the size of the sensor, individual pixel sizes can grow to 1.6 mm and, after pixel binning, can reach 3.2 mm, which is a significant improvement over the competition. By doing this, you can capture more light, photos with a wider dynamic range, and less noise.
A new 8P aspheric lens, which is mounted on top of the sensor, provides further assistance with typical photographic problems including flare, ghosting, and chromatic aberration. In fact, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s entire camera module has anti-glare lens coating, lens edge ink coating, cyclic olefin copolymer material, and an infrared light filter with spin coating technology. Okay, so half of these terms aren’t particularly meaningful to us, but the general idea is that you get a clearer overall picture across the lens.

Raw Photo support

Additionally, the Xiaomi 12S series as a whole supports 10-bit RAW with colour correcting metadata built into the files. This means that Adobe Camera RAW will automatically optimise the photographs and provide you with an excellent starting point for your changes after you import the RAW files in Adobe Lightroom.

Dolby Vision HDR videos for both video recording and playback are available on the 12S Ultra for the first time on an Android handset. Looking at this high dynamic range standard is enjoyable.

Solid stabilisation is a crucial component of excellent video, and the new HyperOIS takes care of it as well. For a broad spectrum of stabilisation and steadier images, this revolutionary technology drives the OIS motor to its initial position by utilising the space between two frames.

A 6.73″ AMOLED colour display is included with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.

Naturally, the phone is on the larger side, and the screen has a small curvature, but what’s really intriguing is the material on the back, which has a leather-like appearance and feel.

As you would anticipate from a contemporary flagship, you also get IP68 dust and water resistance.

Performance

The most recent Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor powers the Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s internal components.

The plus version, according to Xiaomi, is 21% smaller than the 8 Gen 1 (used for the first time in the Galaxy S22 range of devices), and both the CPU and GPU receive performance and energy efficiency boosts of 10% and 30%, respectively.

The business has also created a brand-new heat-dissipation mechanism that better absorbs heat and resembles the veins of a leaf. A 3D cooling pump dramatically improves efficiency by using a network of channels to direct hot air away from warm spots.

Additionally, you receive two brand-new, exclusive Xiaomi Surge chips: the Xiaomi Surge P1 fast-charging chip and the Xiaomi Surge G1 battery management chip, which both significantly enhance battery management and user experience.

Battery and Charging

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra contains a 4,860mAh single-cell silicon-oxygen anode battery, to speak of batteries.

The Surge G1 battery management chip tracks the device’s discharge load and makes precise predictions about how long the battery will last, while adaptive charging guards against overcharging and boosts the total number of charge cycles by 25%.

You get 67W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging, which are all faster than your Galaxy and iPhones but still not the fastest charging rates Xiaomi has to offer.
