Following the discovery of one of their football players dead in the seas of a Spanish port, a heartbroken team has paid their respects.
24-year-old Croatian star Jakov Jelkic was a member of FC Granges-Paccot, a third-tier Swiss team.Marca claims that the unfortunate event happened while he was in Alicante for a tournament with his club.
According to local authorities, Jelkic drowned after falling into the sea while out clubbing with a number of teammates.
The football player was last seen “staggering” after “consuming some sort of alcoholic beverage” at a bar.
The next morning, Jelkic was reported missing by hotel workers after he failed to return.
In a last-ditch effort to find him, his family also posted messages on social media.
However, on Monday afternoon, authorities discovered his body near the port of Alicante, which was a somber discovery.
Since then, police have verified that Jelkic’s death was an accident.
Additionally, his club made a heartfelt social media homage.
It read: “It is with great sadness that we learned of Jakov’s passing.
“All our thoughts go to his family, friends, teammates and all the people who knew him closely or from afar.
“His memory will remain forever engraved in our hearts.
“A friend, a teammate, an inspiration to us all. Rest in peace.”
Fans also paid tribute to Jelkic online.
One said: “Forever in our hearts.”
Another declared: “In support of the family, players and all his loved ones.”
One noted: “This is so sad.”
Another added: “My condolences to the family, friends and team.”
