Over the weekend, in front of horrified onlookers, a public marriage proposal during a Major League Baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox went horribly wrong.
A fan is seen halting his fiancée mid-game as she descends the stairs to her seat in the stadium in a viral video that has amassed over 200,000 views in less than 48 hours.
The man then leads his bewildered girlfriend to him, kisses her, and declares his love for her before bending over and kneeling down, leaving the young lady gasping in shock and covering her lips in anticipation of what would happen next.
The gesture caught the nearby onlookers in the Rogers Centre grandstand off guard, and they all started reaching for their cameras to record what happened next.
Assuming that the proposal would go smoothly, the game’s official camera crew also began to record the event for sharing on the big screens.
To the surprise of the woman and the onlookers, the man then kneels down on the stairs, takes a black box out of his left denim pocket, and opens it to show a Ring Pop.
The young lady strikes her companion as soon as she notices the red lollipop ring, sending Blue Jays supporters into a frenzy.
“What the f–k is wrong with you,” she says while throwing her drink at the man.
Social media users were eager to draw attention to a crucial aspect of the video, despite the fact that it is still unclear whether the proposal was real or a joke.
Given that he had what looks to be another, smaller box in his left pocket, it is assumed the man had the intention of popping the question with a “real” ring after the initial humour and surprise of the Ring Pop.
Social media users were split about who should be blamed for the plan’s failure after seeing the proposal video, with Reddit members in particular unsure of which side they should belong to.
“The guy pulled a jerk move. If he cannot be serious for something important imagine what type of clown he is day to day,” said one user.
“That’s an indication of how the rest of his life would go marrying her … move on dude,” agreed another, as hundreds of commenters suggested this was a “big relationship red flag.”
Users were also quick to come to the man’s defense, saying, “You’re crazy if you think the guy is at blame” and “I get that she didn’t like this, but it’s no reason to slap him across the face. Especially in front of thousands.”
