While hikers gasped in terror and yelled for help, a woman fell 900 feet to her death.
The hiker was discovered in Pitkin County, Colorado, 900 feet below Capitol Peak’s summit.
Officials stated that due to its great exposure and unstable, crumbling granite, Capitol Peak is one of Colorado’s most challenging mountains to climb.
On Saturday just before 8 am, a bystander saw the woman collapse and dialled 911.
He claimed that while the victim was attempting to hold onto a boulder, the rock gave way, causing her to go down the mountain.
The route she took from the knife edge to the Capitol Peak peak to Pierre Lakes Basin is where she fell, according to police.
“The Elk Mountains are treacherous and that the loose, rotting terrain can lead to unstable conditions that can cause serious injuries or death,” the sheriff’s office and rescue team said.
