Margot Kallman was a German Jewish refugee who escaped the nation under the Nazi rule. She moved to London and met Richard Springer, a Jewish immigrant from Poland who had also fled Nazi control. Jerry was born in 1944 in New York City, where the couple married and eventually lived.
Jerry Springer’s parents worked hard to care for their family when he was growing up. Margot Kallman worked as a bank clerk, while Richard Springer owned a shoe business. The family was able to live nicely in Queens, New York, despite their limited salary.
Jerry Springer went to Forest Hills High School, where he excelled academically and was selected “Most Likely to Succeed” by his peers. He moved on to Tulane University, where he majored in political science. Springer went on to attend Northwestern University School of Law after graduation and finally became a lawyer.

Despite his legal success, Jerry Springer’s true calling was in politics. He was a councillor and afterwards the mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio. But it was his controversial talk show, The Jerry Springer Show, that propelled him to national prominence. The show, which debuted in 1991, soon gained popularity for its eccentric guests, dramatic confrontations, and contentious topic matter.
Despite the show’s contentious character, Jerry Springer insisted that he was only giving a forum for individuals to express their thoughts and experiences. “I think people tune in because they’re curious about what other people are like,” he once stated. They’re interested in how other people live. And we offer them a taste of it.”
