When word of a fatal shooting on its campus spread, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a renowned institution tucked away in the heart of North Carolina, was tragically affected. By bridging the gap between photonics and materials science, he sought to push the limits of what was conceivable in the field of light-matter interactions. Yan hoped to open the door for ground-breaking discoveries and applications that could revolutionize numerous fields through his work.
Relationship with Tailei Qi:
The alleged shooter in the UNC Chapel Hill incident was named as Tailei Qi, a graduate research assistant and PhD candidate in mechanical engineering at Louisiana State University. The tragedy was made more complicated by Qi’s relationship to Yan because he was given advice by the very person he killed while conducting research.
