The Invictus Games, which were launched in 2014, are a renowned international multi-sport competition designed especially for wounded, injured, and ill servicemen and women, including both active-duty personnel and veterans. The name “Invictus,” which means “unconquered,” was chosen to symbolize the unflappable spirit that distinguishes these people as they overcome adversity even after suffering from injury or illness.
Invictus Games founder Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, holds this honor. His 2013 trip to the Warrior Games in the United States served as the catalyst for this amazing endeavor. Prince Harry was motivated to create an event that would use athletic competition to uplift and empower wounded, injured, and sick service members after seeing firsthand the transformative potential of sports to promote both psychological and physical healing. The Invictus Games serve as a testament to these people’s resiliency and fortitude by showcasing what they can accomplish after suffering an injury or illness.
Lewis Hamilton, a well-known figure in the motorsports industry and a remarkable seven-time Formula One World Champion, was given the honor of serving as the first Invictus Games ambassador. He went to Tedworth House, a significant site connected to the Games, before making this announcement. Even prior to his official appointment, this action showed his dedication to the cause.
Hamilton showed his support for the Invictus Games by extending an invitation to a group of athletes to attend the British Grand Prix in July 2015. This action demonstrated his commitment to encouraging a sense of camaraderie and respect for the tenacity displayed by these people. Hamilton’s participation in the Invictus Games demonstrates his willingness to use his platform to highlight the fortitude and tenacity of injured, ill, and wounded service members, elevating their stories on a global scale.
According to the organization, the Formula One champion was selected because “his focus, determination and talent have taken him to the summit of one of the world’s most elite sports, making him an ideal role model for the wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women who are using sport as part of their recovery process.”
