On July 24, it was revealed that Tafari Campbell had perished while paddleboarding at Edgartown Great Pond, which is close to the Obamas’ vacation home.
Emergency services were called on Sunday, July 23, in response to a report that “a male paddleboarder had entered the water, appeared to struggle for a moment to remain on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface.
Campbell was identified as the male after the investigation. The Obamas said in a statement: “Tafari was a cherished member of our family. He was a skilled sous chef at the White House when we first met him; he was imaginative and passionate about food and its capacity to unite people.
We got to know him as a warm, jovial, incredibly kind person who made all of our lives a little bit brighter in the years that followed.
Because of this, we begged Tafari to join us as we left the White House, and he graciously accepted. Since then, he has been a part of our lives, and his passing has broken our hearts.
