While coming home from the London Marathon, a runner died unexpectedly.
Steve Shanks finished the marathon in an incredible two hours and 53 minutes.
Who was London Marathon runner Steve Shanks?
Steve Shanks, from Bingham, Nottingham, was a seasoned marathon runner.
He was a member of the Redhill Road Runners, a friendly Nottingham running group.
His wife Jessica Shanks was his wife.
Steve was only 45 years old when he died unexpectedly.
His death was announced by race organisers on April 26, 2023, in a heartbreaking statement.
It said: “Everyone at London Marathon Events was deeply saddened to hear about the sudden death of Steve Shanks as he travelled home on Sunday, April 23 after taking part in the London Marathon.
“Steve, who was 45 and lived in Bingham, Nottingham was a very experienced runner who had completed many marathons and finished on Sunday in 2:53:26.”
The reason of Mr Shank’s death is unknown at this time, but will be determined once medical exams are completed.
Jessica, Steve’s wife, paid homage to her husband on Facebook.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my wonderful husband, Stephen Shanks,” she wrote.
“His passing was sudden & out of the blue.
“He was returning home having spent the day participating in the London Marathon.”
“As you can imagine I’m absolutely in shock & devastated.”
A GoFundMe has been set up in his memory, to raise funds on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a charity close to Steve’s heart.
A touching tribute to Steve on the fundraising page says:
“Steve was a keen runner never happier than running anything, from his local Parkrun, to the Bob Graham Round.
“But he was more than just a runner he was a musician, a knitter, and a renowned quizzer possessed of extensive knowledge of terrible pop music.
“He was a loving husband and soulmate of his wife Jess, treasured son and son in law, and a much loved friend.
“He will be greatly missed and always in our hearts and memories.”
