Chip Tayag flew the weather chopper for Sky3, owned by WBTV.
On November 22, 2022, he and WBTV meteorologist Jason Myers perished after their helicopter crashed just off the southbound lanes of I-77.
Tayag had more than five years of experience working for the news station, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Chip is survived by Kerry Tayag, his wife.
They were residents of Indian Land, South Carolina, a significant Charlotte, North Carolina, enclave.

In a tweet on the accident, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings referred to it as “a horrible day in Charlotte.”
The pilot is a hero in my eyes, Jennings wrote in another tweet.
Witnesses claimed that the pilot diverted his flight away from the highway in order to save lives.
“Because of his heroic acts, there were no further injuries or vehicles on the highway involved in the incident.”
What did WBTV say about the crash?
The news anchors, fresh with shock from learning about their colleagues, read the following statement on air:
“The WBTV family is grieving a terrible loss.”
“Our news helicopter Sky3 crashed late Tuesday morning with two of our colleagues on board.”
“Meteorologist Jason Myers and pilot Chip Tayag lost their lives.”

WBTV anchors Jamie Boll and Molly Grantham remembered the two of them together after hearing the remark.
According to Grantham, the station delayed airing the news until shortly after 3pm to give the men’s wives and families time to get the word out.
Boll claimed to have last seen Tayag in the helicopter that morning as he was getting ready to pick up Myers after having just landed on the landing pad of the new station.
He continued by saying that the two men’s smiles, which flashed on the screen from their photos, represented who they truly were on a daily basis.
How did Sky3 helicopter to crash?
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have opened a formal inquiry.
A witness told WCNC Charlotte that the pilot appeared to be aware of their predicament and made an “aggressive move” to keep the helicopter from colliding with the busy road, which would have injured a great number of additional people.
The man said: “I think that he absolutely knew that he was gonna have to put that down.”

“He did his best to put it down … Whoever the pilot was, did their best to put that thing down where it wasn’t going to injure a lot of people, and in that respect, they did a fabulous job.”
