The suspect in the shooting at the Dollar General store in Jacksonville has been named as Ryan Palmeter.

On Saturday night in Jacksonville, Florida, a shooter entered a Dollar General store and started shooting, killing three people before turning the gun on himself.

The attack was racially motivated, and the suspect had left behind manifestos outlining his anti-racist views, according to Sheriff T K Waters. A white man in his early 20s who was wearing body armor and had a lightweight semi-automatic rifle and a handgun killed the three victims, two men and a woman. This tragedy has drawn widespread condemnation and is being investigated as a hate crime.

Ryan Palmeter: Who Was He? The Shooting Suspect in Jacksonville

Later it was discovered that the shooter was Ryan Palmeter, a 21-year-old Clay County, Jacksonville resident. With a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style rifle, both of which had swastikas drawn on them, he entered the Dollar General store.

After the attack, the suspect, who had allegedly posted racist writings, committed suicide. Palmeter put on a ballistics vest before being spotted on the Edward Waters University campus shortly before the shooting. His social media usage was minimal; only one tweet from 2019 mentioning his academic interests and graphic design abilities and his Facebook page appearing to have been deleted.

The suspect’s hatred of Black people and his intention to carry out the shooting were both confirmed in a number of manifestos that were found to have been left behind by the suspect.

The incident, which tragically took place on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and the famous “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr., reminds us of a long history of racial violence against Black Americans.

Residents of Jacksonville and the country at large are struggling with the heartbreaking fact that such incidents continue to devastate communities, underscoring the importance of addressing systemic racism and gun violence.
