Robbie Shepherd, a seasoned broadcaster who presided over Take the Floor on BBC Radio Scotland for 35 years, has passed away. When he passed away, he was 87 years old.
Gary Innes succeeded Robbie in 2016, taking over the longest-running radio program created in Scotland. Following the tragic news, Gary paid tribute to his predecessor on Twitter.

Author and broadcaster Robert Horne Shepherd MBE was from Scotland. In addition to writing a Doric column for the Press and Journal in Aberdeen, he was well known for hosting programs on BBC Radio Scotland.

In the 1950s, Robbie Shepherd worked as an accountant on Union Terrace in Aberdeen. He was also experimenting with mouth organ playing as a musician. After that, he got a job as a compère for variety shows. Shepherd produced theater productions and variety shows before making the switch to radio.
In 1980, Robbie took over as host of the BBC Radio Scotland show Take the Floor, and he did so until 2016. For BBC Scotland, he also hosted The Reel Blend on television and delivered episodes of The Beechgrove Garden and Sheepdog trials on the radio. The two other subjects that Shepherd wrote books about were Scottish dance music and Scottish country dancing, two of his well-known interests.
Shepherd spoke a dialect of Scotland’s northeast called Doric. He has written books about the dialect of the Doric language. In April 1993, he started writing a Doric column for the Press & Journal. He published his last piece in the column on July 15, 2023.
