After attempting to assist in the cover-up of her boyfriend’s double killing in 2002, former teaching assistant Maxine Carr was granted a whole new identity.
She was given a fresh start after courts ruled that she was not involved in the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman by Soham.
Who is Maxine Carr?
On February 16, 1977, Maxine Carr was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
Carr was considered by her peers to be a shy misfit who had few friends and did poorly in school when she was younger, but she had a strong desire to become a teacher.
Maxine Carr started working as a volunteer support assistant at Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman’s elementary school, St. Andrew’s, in the spring of 2002.
After her boyfriend, Ian Huntley, killed 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, she was sentenced to prison for giving him a fake alibi.
During Huntley’s murder trial, Carr made the infamous decision to turn on him while he was in the dock, referring to him as “that thing in the box.”
She, along with the murderers of James Bulger, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, and child killer Mary Bell, are the only four former UK convicts who have lifetime protection from prying eyes.
How did she meet Ian Huntley?
At 1999, Carr, who was 22 at the time, met Huntley, 25, in a Grimsby nightclub.
Carr claims that she consented to start seeing Huntley the same night because she was “instantly attracted” to his confident and friendly demeanour.
Shortly after, she moved into the murderer’s apartment in the North Lincolnshire town of Barton-upon-Humber.
Huntley began working as the college’s caretaker in November 2001, and he also moved into the cottage that came with the position.
Carr, who shared a home in the peaceful village with Huntley, was employed as a teaching assistant at the institution Holly and Jessica attended.
What happened when Holly and Jessica were killed?
On August 4, 2002, Jessica and Holly, best friends, decided to go exploring after a barbecue at Holly’s house.
When Holly’s mother noticed they were gone, she became worried because they hadn’t told anybody they were leaving the house.
Ian Huntley, a local resident and the person responsible for looking after the school, enticed the two girls into his home, where he then killed them.
For nearly two weeks, hundreds of volunteers and police officials searched the community and its surroundings.
Later, roughly 10 miles from where the girls vanished, their remains were discovered.
Carr told authorities that Huntley, her former fiancé, had been with her at the time, despite the fact that Huntley was already being questioned for his actions.
It meant that he was first disregarded by authorities as a suspect. She also cleared the evidence out of their home.
She had actually been in Grimsby, where she had been in a club with another man.
Both were detained, and Huntley received a double life sentence with a minimum of 40 years in prison.
After turning against Huntley during the trial, Carr was accused of tampering with evidence.
Where is Maxine Carr now?
Only 21 months of Carr’s sentence for perverting the course of justice were served as a former teaching assistant.
In 2004, after being released from prison, she was granted a new secret identity out of fear for her safety.
She was given lifetime anonymity by draconian judicial decrees.
The taxpayer has spent over £2.5 million on Carr’s new identity and police protection since her 2004 release from jail.
In less than two years, she was relocated to over ten different safe houses, and according to The Mirror, she gave birth to her first child in a covert safe house in 2011.
Since then, the infamous liar has rebuilt her life, getting even wedded in a spectacular ceremony while donning a £2,000 ivory gown.
Carr’s devoted partner led her down the aisle at a lavish wedding location in 2014 despite being aware of her troubling past.
However, it was said that her new husband’s family was astonished by his choice to wed Carr after knowing of her dishonourable history.
Carr was reported to have revelled in the limelight, laughing and joking with guests and bridesmaids before stepping outside into the lovely gardens of the site.
