Two teenagers from New Jersey have been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly shooting a cab driver near Rutgers University last week.
According to prosecutors, the 57-year-old cabbie, Kofi Addo, was fatally shot in Somerset County on Thursday after the two young suspects and their accomplice called a cab with the intent of robbing the driver.
They allegedly directed the cab to a location on Rose Street, about a mile from Rutgers University, shortly before 10 p.m., according to officials.
According to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, when the gun-toting teens got into the cab, they confronted Addo and tried to rob him before one of the teens shot the defenceless cabbie in the head as he drove, killing him.
The cab then collided with a car parked in the driveway of a home on Sydney Place, and the young killers fled on foot, according to officials.
Prosecutors said the suspects were found a day later in Franklin Township and New Brunswick.
A 14-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl have been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, weapons, and robbery. A 13-year-old accomplice is charged with first-degree robbery.
The suspects were being held in the Middlesex County Youth Detention Centre and were scheduled to appear in Family Court.
