An invited neighbour is accused of killing a radio broadcaster and viciously attacking his family at their home.
The suspect, according to police in Chesterfield Township, Michigan, fatally stabbed Detroit’s WWJ 950 overnight anchor Jim Matthews and his girlfriend before attempting to commit himself.
According to TMZ, Matthews’ girlfriend managed to escape the house with the couple’s five-year-old daughter and wave down a passing motorist.
The young daughter was also hurt, along with the girlfriend, who has not been officially recognised by police.
The body of Matthews was discovered by responding police.
Officers later discovered the couple’s 10-year-old kid shackled and suffering from severe trauma injuries in a closet.
While his kid is in a stable condition, Matthews’ girlfriend and son are classified in critical condition at the hospital.
The suspect, a 54-year-old guy, was subsequently discovered, according to police, in the basement of the building.
He had allegedly attempted suicide and overdosed on drugs before suffering a self-inflicted wound.
He was also admitted to the hospital and is said to be doing well.
This morning, devastated colleagues paid tribute to Matthews who was described as “one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.”
“There have been many tears shed in our newsroom today and Jim will be greatly missed,” a statement from WWJ Newsradio 950 read.
Authorities are still unclear on the motive of the attack and no criminal charges have currently been issued.
The name of the suspect has not been announced.
Residents were reassured by Chesterfield Township Police Chief Brian Bassett that the occurrence was a “isolated tragedy” and that the neighbourhood is not currently under danger.
The cause of the death is still being looked into.
