In the US Virgin Islands, an investigation is being conducted into Jamie Cail’s unexpected death. Cail was a former US swimming champion.
The 42-year-old former athlete was discovered unconscious in their St. John house by her partner on February 21 and was pronounced dead at the scene.
What is known about Cail and the enigma surrounding her untimely demise is detailed below.
Who was Jamie Cail?
Cail was a swimming prodigy in her youth and was originally from Claremont, New Hampshire.
She made national headlines in the 1990s while still a high school student when, according to the news site Swim Swam, she swam the third leg for the squad that won the gold medal in the 800 free relay at the Pan Pacific Championships in 1997.
As a member of the US Swimming National B Team, Cail won a silver medal in the 800 free at the 1998–1999 Swimming World Cup in Brazil.
According to Swim Swam, she competed for the swimming powerhouse while attending the college-preparatory Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. She still holds the team records in the 200-yard fly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-meter individual medley, and 400-meter individual medley for the 15-16 age group.
Cail was at Bolles for the 1996–97 season and appeared on 10 Top 16 rankings released by United States Swimming.
Afterwards, she relocated to Huntington Beach, California, where she trained with the Golden West Swim Club and competed in many high school state championship races in the 200-meter individual medley and 500-meter freestyle.
Afterward, Cail enrolled at the University of Maine, where she participated in swim competitions during the 2000–2001 academic year, as reported by ABC News.
She also competed for the University of Southern California Trojans, where she competed in the 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter freestyles as well as the 400-meter individual medley.
According to WMUR, Cail worked at a neighbourhood coffee shop and resided in St. John with her unnamed boyfriend.
“She was just she was she was a very beautiful person,” a friend of Cail’s told the outlet.
“She had a huge heart. She was really loving and kind and well-loved and popular on the island and everybody knows her.”
How did Jamie Cail die?
Early on February 21st, Cail’s boyfriend came home from a nearby pub to check on her and found her lifeless.
He found her on the floor when he got home, according to a statement from the police.
She was taken urgently to the Myrah Keating-Smith Community Health Center, where doctors tried to rescue her by doing CPR but were unsuccessful.
The only information provided by the local authorities was that Cail “succumbed to her sickness.”
Police have opened a criminal inquiry into her enigmatic demise, which has no known cause of death.
“This case is presently under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau,” USVI police said in a statement.
