When Harold Shipman was found guilty of killing his patients, he earned the moniker “Dr. Death.”

Who was this man who was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes?

Harold Shipman, who was he?

With an estimated 250 victims, Harold Shipman rose to prominence as one of the most active serial killers in modern history.

He was born on the Bestwood Estate, a council housing development in Nottingham, on January 14, 1946.

Shipman was particularly close to his mother, who passed away at the age of 17 from lung cancer.

He wed Primrose May Oxtoby on November 5, 1966, and the two went on to have four kids together.

What was Harold Shipman’s occupation?

Shipman’s access to his victims came from his employment as a doctor. Before graduating in 1970, he completed his medical studies at the University of Leeds’ Leeds School of Medicine.

His career began at the Yorkshire hospital Pontefract General Infirmary, and in 1974 he accepted his first general practitioner (GP) position at the Abraham Ormerod Medical Center in Todmorden.

The year after, Shipman was discovered fabricating pethidine prescriptions for his own use.

He paid a £600 fine and spent a short time in a York drug rehab facility.

He carried on practicing general practice in Manchester before opening his own office at 21 Market Street in 1993.

Why was Harold Shipman apprehended?

When Dr. Linda Reynolds brought up concerns about Shipman’s high patient death rate to John Pollard, the coroner for the South Manchester District, in March 1998, Shipman was the subject of the first investigation.

She was worried about all the forms he had asked her to have countersigned for elderly women’s cremations.

Police closed the investigation on April 17 after not being able to find enough evidence to file charges.

Following the conclusion of the investigation, Shipman murdered three more people.

A few months later, in August, cabbie John Shaw reported to the police his suspicions that Shipman had killed 21 patients.

Several of the elderly clients he brought to the hospital passed away under Shipman’s care, which made him suspicious.

Before being detained on September 7, 1998, Shipman was discovered to have forged a will and medical records.

Who were the victims of Harold Shipman?

Shipman was accused of killing 15 women between 1995 and 1998 by administering lethal doses of diamorphine. But it’s believed that he may have murdered up to 250 people.

These were Shipman’s known victims:

After six days of deliberation, on January 31, 2000, the jury decided that Shipman had committed 15 murders and one forgery.

He was given a life sentence for each of the 15 murder charges, with the recommendation that he also serve a whole life tariff in addition to a four-year sentence for forging Grundy’s will.

Harold Shipman, did he confess to any murders?

Shipman refuted the scientific evidence against him and denied having committed the crimes.

He never expressed his opinions in the media.

Even after he was found guilty, his wife continued to insist that he was innocent.

What happened to Harold Shipman?

At 57 years old, Shipman hanged himself on January 13, 2004, at 6:20 a.m. in his cell at HM Prison Wakefield. At 8:10 a.m., he was pronounced dead.
