Gavin Escobar, a former tight end for the Dallas Cowboys, was one of two climbers who perished in California during an apparent accident, according to authorities on Wednesday. Escobar has a 31-year-old age.
Firefighters made an effort to assist two wounded rock climbers at Tahquitz Rock in Idyllwild in the San Bernardino National Forest on Wednesday, according to tweets from Cal Fire and Riverside County Fire Department.
The department later reported that when rescuers arrived at the scene, “both individuals perished at the spot.” Escobar and Chelsea Walsh, 33, were identified as the victims by the Riverside sheriff’s coroner’s office.
During the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cowboys selected Escobar with the 47th overall pick.
Before spending one season with the Baltimore Ravens, he played for Dallas for four years. All with the Cowboys, he concluded his NFL career with 30 receptions and 8 touchdowns.
Late on Thursday, the Cowboys paid tribute to the tight end on their Twitter page.
