Frank Oppenheimer: Who was he?
J. Robert Oppenheimer, a well-known physicist and one of the key players in the Manhattan Project’s development of the atomic bomb during World War II, had an older brother named Frank.
Another American physicist and educator was Frank Oppenheimer. On August 14, 1912, he was born, and on February 3, 1985, he died. He is best known for his work in the field of science education as well as for creating the Exploratorium, a renowned science museum in San Francisco, California.
During World War II, Frank taught at the University of Minnesota while also conducting research on explosives. Because of his brother’s involvement in the atomic bomb, he faced criticism following the war.
Along with many other individuals associated with the Manhattan Project, Frank Oppenheimer was also charged with being a communist sympathizer during the McCarthy era. Even though these charges were later dropped against him, it took him some time to find work after that.
Frank founded the Exploratorium in 1969 with the intention of creating a location where guests of all ages could interact with and comprehend science exhibits in a hands-on, immersive way. The Exploratorium is recognized as a “learning by doing” pioneer and as having had a significant impact on numerous other interactive science museums around the globe.
