One of Scotland’s most prominent unsolved murders is THE murder of Elizabeth McCabe.
Following McCabe’s killing, one of the most extensive manhunts in Scottish history was conducted, but to no avail. What is known about her is as follows.
Who was Elizabeth McCabe?
Twenty-year-old Elizabeth McCabe was a student nursery nurse from Dundee, Scotland.
Shortly before she turned 21, she was killed in February 1980 after a night out with her buddy.
She was once described as quiet and reserved, but as she started attending college, she started interacting with people and going to bars and clubs.
What happened to Elizabeth McCabe?
On the evening of February 10, 1980, McCabe went out with Sandra Niven to a number of pubs in Dundee.
She left the club by herself about 2:30 a.m., and Niven was unable to find her.
After learning that she had missed work that day, which was unusual for her, her parents filed a missing persons report.
Two men discovered McCabe’s body on February 26, 1980, wrapped in a blue sweater and buried beneath a pile of branches while out rabbit hunting with their dogs.
Within 11 months had passed since the death of Carol Lannen, whose body was discovered only 150 yards from McCabe’s.
Police searched for the murderer for months without success, but they left the case open.
Tayside Police ordered an investigation into the fatalities at Templeton Woods in 1996.
This happened following the Glasgow serial murderer case involving Bible John being reopened.
Eventually, in 2004, the case was revived, and material was transferred to DNA labs for additional examination.
Who has been charged with Elizabeth McCabe’s murder?
No one has been accused of killing McCabe as of yet.
Vincent Simpson, a taxi driver, was accused of the murder in 2005 and tried in 2007, however he was declared not guilty and freed.
Although there were no intentions to revive the case, a senior investigator on the case told STV news in 2020 that the murder could yet be solved.
