Irish singer Boy George’s mother passed away at the age of 84.
Dublin native Dinah O’Dowd spent her formative years on Wellington Street, just off Dorset Street, before moving to London at the age of 19. She passed away today in the UK, with George and her family by her side. As fans paid tribute to Dinah, the singer of The Culture Club said he is “devastated” by the loss. At this time, George’s family has also requested privacy.
In 2007, Dinah and George appeared together on Irish television for a Miriam O’Callaghan interview. She talked about her time spent in Dublin during the interview.
To the RTE host, she remarked: “I make as many trips as I can home. twice a year, at least. Additionally, if any parties or noteworthy events are taking place.” She also discussed how surprised she was by how quickly George rose to fame as a member of The Culture Club.
She continued: “It’s funny really, after a while, being amongst people with lots of fame and lots of money, it’s quite boring. Honestly it is quite boring because they’re all false. What people perceive to be fame, I didn’t see that. I just thought to meself, that’s him and this is me and I’ve got other kids, I’ve to get on with my life.”
