In a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday night in downtown Orlando, a suspect named Daton Viel seriously wounded two police officers. According to Orlando Police, the SWAT team shot and killed the suspect.
The alleged shooter was shot and killed by a SWAT team early on Saturday.
Who was Daton Viel?
The age of Daton Viel was 28. A shootout between the SWAT team and the alleged shooter resulted in his death. The incident forced the evacuation of the Holiday Inn on Caravan Court at 6 a.m., where the suspect, 28-year-old Daton Viel, had barricaded himself in a room. He was repeatedly told to give himself up, but each time he refused, the situation grew worse.
The officers were wounded by gunfire on Friday night at 11 p.m. while searching a vehicle driven by Daton Viel that was linked to a Miami homicide case. The Miami-Dade Police Department reports that on July 10 at 1:40 pm, Michael Williams was shot and killed in a shooting.
Using security footage, the Miami-Dade police were able to identify a vehicle connected to the earlier crime; it was later discovered in Orlando on Friday night. After that, the Orlando police continued their inquiry. While the officers were conducting their investigation, Viel allegedly fired shots at them, which led to a carjacking as he attempted to flee in a different vehicle.
Viel was detained earlier this year after being charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. He was free on bail.
In a statement, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said, “I want to thank those officers and their families for their service and dedication to our city. I had the opportunity to meet with them earlier today. Every single day, they risk their lives to maintain the safety of our neighborhood.”
