Carlo Fortunato Pietro Ponti Sr. was born in Italy on December 11, 1912.
He was a film producer recognized for his over 140 productions and is credited with popularizing Italian cinema in the post-World War II era.
Ponti received the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1954 for his work on La Strada. Doctor Zhivago, released in 1965, was another hit for him.
Ponti died on January 10, 2007, in Geneva, Switzerland, of pulmonary problems.

What happened to Sophia Loren?
Loren reportedly fell in her bathtub at her Switzerland residence on September 24, 2023.
According to her agent, Andrea Giusti, the event resulted in the renowned actress shattering both her hip and a thigh bone.
Loren was shown to be recovering from successful surgery for a leg fracture on Monday.
According to the Associated Press, Giusti stated in an email that the operation “went very well and now we only need to wait.”
