In a “violent rampage” throughout Brooklyn on Monday, a U-Haul truck struck and hurt eight people, including a police officer, according to New York City police.
According to New York Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell, officers were called to a report that a man was operating a U-Haul truck in the Bay Ridge neighbourhood of Brooklyn and striking pedestrians around 10:50 a.m.
Before midday, police finally pulled over the car close to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel entrance and detained the driver.
Despite the fact that Sewell withheld the driver’s name, four senior law enforcement officers recognised him as 62-year-old Weng Sor, who had a prior criminal history dating back to 2005 in Clark County, Nevada. It was unclear right away if he had legal representation.
According to two senior law enforcement officials informed on the situation, the van had an Arizona licence plate.
According to Sewell, seven distinct places were being handled as a result of the rampage.
According to her, one of the injured was a police officer “taking police action” while the other seven injured people were civilians. Among the injured, three were on mopeds and at least one was a pedestrian, a man in his 30s, according to officials.
According to the New York City Fire Department and police, four of the injured people have minor injuries, while two are in serious condition and two are in critical condition.
There is “no indication that there is any participation of terrorism in this incident,” according to Sewell.
Sor has a Brooklyn address as well as a previous Las Vegas address.
His criminal history in Nevada includes a felony battery case from 2015 and a speeding ticket from last month. According to court documents, he was found guilty in the 2015 case and given a sentence that included a minimum of one year in prison and a maximum of three years. Additionally, a mental health evaluation was mandated for him.
“We have no clue of motivations at this time but this wasn’t an accident,” tweeted Bay Ridge-based New York City Councilman Justin Brannan.
Monday afternoon, Governor Kathy Hochul tweeted that she had been briefed on the issue and that her team was working with the authorities.
