VIGILANTE Many London motorists consider Mike van Erp to be Britain’s most despised cyclist.

Cycling Mikey, a 51-year-old Zimbabwean, takes it upon himself to ride his bike around the capital hunting for cars who violate traffic laws.

Van Erp looks for drivers who are breaking the Road Vehicles Construction and Use Amendment No 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 in particular.

This bans the use of handheld communication devices while driving.

Over the course of four years, van Erp has captured 1,400 drivers using their phones, resulting in 1,800 penalty points and £110,000 in fines.

People are split on whether he is a road safety hero or a complete annoyance as a result of his conduct.

No one is exempt from his harsh enforcement.

While out with The Times, he noticed an ambulance driver looking at his phone.

Van Erp said he will report the NHS worker after confronting him and apologizing.

When asked if there are any persons he does not report, he said, “I will occasionally let people off if the evidence is on the edge of what I consider prosecutable.”

“Maybe slightly more likely to let them off if they’re polite.”

Van Erp is a daring crusader who distributes the film to his 100,000 YouTube subscribers in the hopes of making the UK’s roadways safer.

He has also inspired many more riders to follow in his footsteps and deploy cameras to catch potentially unsafe drivers.

To others, he appears to be a self-righteous interfering busybody.

In 2020, he recorded Guy Ritchie texting while driving his Range Rover, which resulted in the film director being banned from driving for six months due to his previous nine speeding points.

In 2021, he also caught Chris Eubank on the phone, and the former world champion boxer told him to “go away.” “Away you go, away you go.”

Eubank received three penalty points.

Former England footballer Frank Lampard was also apprehended by him in 2021 while driving a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.Lampard, who kept his window closed and tried to ignore van Erp, was charged, but the case was withdrawn after Lampard’s defense team stated that the evidence failed to prove that the phone Lampard was holding was turned on or was being used for interactive contact.

Van Erp intercepts three more persons on their cellphones within 20 minutes of intercepting the ambulance driver.

When a woman in a Mercedes realizes she is being filmed, she raises her window.

When she is frightened by the man, another woman in a convertible Mini races away.

Van Erp says he rides his bike along West Carriage Drive between Hyde Park and South Kensington because “it’s really easy to catch them.”

“It’s like throwing fish guts, blood, and fish oil into the water to attract sharks,” he told the paper. People told me years ago that I should play the Jaws theme song in my videos as I approach.”

His final victim is a lorry driver, who does not become enraged when he is apprehended and even holds up his phone to indicate that the contact has ended and discloses that he has already received six points on his license.

The law was reinforced in 2022, making it an offense for a motorist to just be touching a switched-on handheld phone.

Six points and a £200 fine are the maximum penalties.

A driver who accumulates 12 points on his or her license may be disqualified for six months or more.

When asked if he is pleased that the driver may lose his license and hence his income, van Erp answered, “I know, it’s a difficult thing, especially if I have to face him in court.”

“Although it’s painful, I still think that I’m doing the right thing.”

He did end up reporting him, saying: “He already had six points, so he’s not learning from the lessons.

“I felt his pain but nice people still end up killing and seriously injuring others.”

As well as his YouTube site, van Erp also uploads footage to a police website which is set up for citizen reporting.

It is used by the Met Police to sift through evidence in order to impose fines.

The average yearly number of reports reported to the Met was 4,750 between 2018 and 202.

The most recent annual figure is expected to exceed 8,600 by October.

According to police, at least one-third of the reports fulfilled the evidentiary criteria for penalties or prosecution.

In the first half of this year, the Met’s traffic cops issued 3,476 citations for cell phone use.

Van Erp is a major fan of BBC and Channel 5 presenter Jeremy Vine, who calls him a “inspiration, genuinely.”

Vine said: “Mikey is not mad, not obsessed, not a vigilante.

“He simply believes rules are there to be followed. The police can’t police everything, so people like Mikey fill in the gaps.”
