The 49-year-old initially gained notoriety in 2012 when she created history by becoming the first woman to climb two 8000-meter peaks in a single 24-hour effort.
She has since scaled numerous heights and, in 2018, was chosen captain of The North Face Athlete Team.
Men’s Journal also named Nelson one of the most adventurous women of the last 25 years and she was National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurer of the Year, according to her biography.
