In the opening match of the Women’s World Cup, Sophia Smith and seasoned captain Lindsey Horan led the United States Women’s National Team to yet another convincing victory.
Smith demonstrated her prowess on the field by scoring two important goals that significantly aided the Americans’ victory. The tournament’s inaugural participant Vietnam was defeated by the two-time defending champions, who finished with a final score of 3-0.

Sophia Olivia Smith represents both the American national team and Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Her birthday is August 10, 2000.
She was chosen to participate in two international friendlies against Russia for the senior national team in March 2017.
She participated in collegiate sports while attending Stanford University, where she was instrumental in helping her squad win the 2019 national title. The Thorns selected her with the first overall pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft on January 16, 2020.
Smith was born to Mollie and Kenny Smith and has two older sisters named Gabrielle and Savannah. While Smith’s father played basketball at the University of Wyoming, Savannah played basketball at the University of Northern Colorado.
She attended Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, and was selected for the First Team All-Conference during her freshman year.
Smith also played basketball for the varsity squad. In her first season at Stanford University, she scored seven goals. The following year, she scored seventeen. She began playing collegiate soccer there in 2018.
She scored three goals to help Stanford defeat UCLA in the 2019 College Cup semifinal, and Stanford went on to win the national title following a penalty shootout.
Smith participated in the NWSL draft on January 16, 2020, and the Portland Thorns FC selected her as the first pick.
Smith won the league MVP honor in 2022. The Thorns went on to win the championship, and she was chosen as the NWSL Championship MVP after scoring the game’s first goal.
Smith scored her first hat trick of the season on April 1, 2023, helping her squad defeat Kansas City Current 4-1.
