One of the most prestigious positions in fashion has now been filled.
Gucci announced on Saturday that Sabato De Sarno will assume the position of creative director.
In a statement, the 39-year-old Italian designer said he was honored to accept the position: “I am proud to join a House with such an extraordinary history and heritage, that over the years has been able to welcome and cherish values I believe in. I am touched and excited to contribute my creative vision for the brand.”
After starting his career in the fashion sector in 2005 with Prada, Sarno has been in it for almost twenty years. Later, he changed to Dolce & Gabbana, and in 2009, he joined Valentino, where he eventually rose to the position of fashion director, in charge of both the company’s men’s and women’s collection.
The designer has worked with a number of Italy’s most prestigious luxury fashion brands, so he brings with him a rich and relevant expertise, said Marco Bizzarri, President and CEO of Gucci. I am confident that Sabato will lead our creative teams with a unique vision that will help write this exciting future chapter, maintaining the House’s fashion authority while capitalising on its rich tradition thanks to his profound grasp and love of Gucci’s distinctive legacy.
Alessandro Michele, who has served as the fashion house’s creative director since 2015, announced his resignation in November. There are times when pathways diverge because of the many viewpoints we all may have, Michele said in a statement. At the time, the brand did not provide a rationale for the change-up.
The first Gucci runway collection by Sarno will make its debut in September during Milan Women’s Fashion Week.
