Rudolph “Rudy” Garcia, the 48-year-old convicted criminal who repeatedly stabbed 25-year-old EMS worker Julia Fatum last week, was reportedly charged with attempted murder and assault in Manhattan Criminal Court. Garcia reportedly told authorities shortly after being arrested that the EMTs who were treating him were “fake.”According to Assistant District Attorney Lauren Breen, he also claimed they “kidnapped” him despite the fact that he did not require medical attention. Garcia was apparently being treated by Fatum on their way to a hospital around West 58th Street and 9th Avenue when the latter stabbed her six times with a kitchen knife, leaving her with “serious physical injury from the stab wounds to her chest, arm, and leg.” The EMS worker was released from the hospital.
What is known about Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Garcia?
Garcia is a convicted felon who was recently arraigned for stabbing Fatum, an EMS worker, on their way to the hospital. According to The New York Post, Garcia previously had two felony convictions for assaulting a police officer, three misdemeanor convictions, and at least two failures to appear in court, according to prosecutors.
Garcia was charged with attempted murder and assault after stabbing Fatum, who “suffered significant blood loss” and required many surgeries as a result of the stabbing. Fatum could be seen crying out in pain in video footage of the attack, while another EMS worker could be heard asking Garcia, “What the hell is he doing?” What exactly are you doing? Now is the time to back off! Keep your hands to yourself!”
Meanwhile, Garcia was heard crying, “I don’t know what happened,” before the EMT responded, “You stabbed her, bro!” Garcia was ordered jailed on $500,000 cash bail following his arraignment by Judge Soma Syed.
In 2017, the 48-year-old allegedly punched a police officer who was attempting to arrest him for hitting his sister. In addition, he was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon for owning a boxcutter. Garcia was recently apprehended in a metro station with a knife hidden in his boot, “which is the same place he stored the secreted knife” used in the attack.
While Fatum was recently released from the hospital, she still has a long way to go before she is fully recovered. Following the attack, her mother, Cara Fatum-Grant, turned to Facebook to address both the incident and Garcia’s criminal background. “Fact: Rouldoph ‘Rudy’ Garcia, 48, of the Bronx, New York, has eight prior arrests, including criminal possession of a weapon, assault, menacing with a weapon, drugs, burglary, and assault on a police officer,” Cara wrote on Facebook.
“He has been returned to civilization eight times. New York has let its citizens down. “How is your bail reform going?” she inquired. Cara, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by the support her daughter received while getting therapy. “I’m overwhelmed; I can’t believe so many people can see the light.”
