Who is Richard Flook?
In 1988, Mary-Louise McLaws and Richard Flook became husband and wife. He is not well-known, but he and his wife had two children: Zachary and Zia.
Mary-Louise lost her battle with cancer and died. On Saturday, August 12, 2023, Richard made a death announcement at Sydney’s Woollahra Wolper Hospital, saying, “Our dear Mary-Louise passed away in her sleep.”
Professor of Epidemiology Mary-Louise previously worked for the World Health Organization (WHO).
She made disease prevention the focus of her professional life.
Aside from Australia, she had worked in ten other nations, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China. Additionally, she guided Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In order to stop the disease from spreading, Mary-Louise had also backed the enforcement of face masks and border closures.
However, Mary-Louise had been absent from the University of New South Wales ever since her brain cancer diagnosis in January 2022.
In the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, she received the title of Officer of the Order of Australia.
This was done in honor of her “distinguished service to medical research, particularly epidemiology and infection prevention”.
Her death was sad news, according to federal health minister Mark Butler, who said in an interview with ABC Radio that “Hers was an incredibly calm, articulate voice at a time that was very frightening to Australians.
“It was a great source of comfort to the Australian people to hear her on programs like yours and to see her on TV outlining in a very calm but authoritative and articulate way, the best way we could protect ourselves.
However, it was only a small portion of a lifetime career she gave to infectious diseases and epidemiology, particularly in NSW in areas like HIV and viral hepatitis.
