A man has been arrested in the United States on suspicion of assaulting Turkey’s diplomatic offices in New York with a crowbar and shattering its windows, according to law enforcement officials.

The detention on Friday drew condemnation from both US and Turkish authorities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the culprit a “terrorist” and asked US authorities to apprehend him earlier this week.

In an email to Al Jazeera, the New York Police Department identified Recep Akbiyik, 29, as the suspect. He is charged with threatening, criminal mischief, making terroristic threats, criminal possession of a weapon, and attempted burglary, according to a police spokesman.

According to Turkish media, Akbiyik is a Turkish citizen who escaped Turkey a year ago. His true motives remain unclear.

In a video provided by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency early Monday, a guy wearing a helmet and a black suit can be seen shattering the building’s glass.

The Turkish House is a skyscraper in Manhattan near the United Nations headquarters. There is a Turkish mission to the UN as well as a Turkish consulate.
The incident occurred about a week before Erdogan and opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu faced off in Turkey’s presidential run-off election.

Turkish emigrants in New York voted this week at the Turkish House. Turkey will hold elections on Sunday. Erdogan won the first round of voting earlier this month, but he lacked the requisite majority to declare an outright triumph.

Despite the fact that the United States and Turkey are NATO members, tensions between the two countries have risen in recent years as a result of Washington’s backing for Kurdish terrorists in Syria.

During Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Turkey aided in negotiating a contract to maintain selling Ukrainian grains, and US officials have regularly underlined the importance of their partnership with Turkey.
