After authorities tapped a counsellor’s phone and discovered disturbing evidence, the counsellor acknowledged having sex with the 13-year-old kid under her care.
The police, who were on a three-way call with the counsellor and the boy’s mother, discovered Payton Shires’ purported confession. Investigators in Columbus, Ohio, the United States, allegedly found disturbing video of the sex act with the child.
In September, a worried parent reported their suspicions, prompting law enforcement to move quickly. Shires, 24, was discovered to have had illicit sex with a child.
On September 27, the mother of the nameless child called Columbus Police and asked the boy if he had “deleted the videos” or if anyone had seen them. Officers then set up a three-way call for Shires, the mother, and themselves.
The counselor allegedly acknowledged having a sexual relationship with the unidentified 13-year-old there. Shires was detained while police released the 24-year-old’s mugshot and information on his counseling license.
Prior work revealed that on June 12, Shires had obtained her National Youth Advocate Program-approved counseling license. Since then, a company spokesperson has issued a statement confirming knowledge of the incident, according to ABC6.
They said: “Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. The National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) is saddened by the situation involving one of our former employees and a young person served by our organization.
“NYAP has reported the situation to Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) and is collaborating with them and the Columbus Police Department on this case.”
The NYAP support families in the foster care system. Though they said they were now aware of Shires’ alleged crimes, they did not specify when the 24-year-old had stopped working for them.
Shiress appeared in court on Friday while detained at the Franklin County Corrections Center. She matched the bail amount of more than £400,000 ($500,000) ordered by Judge Mike Mcallister.
