According to Skate Canada, former Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul passed away at the age of 31 in a car accident.
In a statement, Skate Canada noted that Alexandra and partner Mitchell Islam “won multiple international medals during her illustrious career, claimed three Canadian Championship medals, and competed at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.” Her warmth and kindness, which won her the admiration of teammates, coaches, and supporters alike, were the only qualities that could rival her commitment to excellence.
Paul was involved in a seven-vehicle collision earlier this week in Melancthon Township, about 60 miles northwest of Toronto. Her infant son, who was also in the vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The former skater was declared dead on the spot. A 67-year-old man who suffered serious injuries was airlifted to a trauma center in Toronto along with three other victims of the collision.
Mitchell Islam: Who is he?
Canadian Mitchell Islam used to compete in ice dancing. Islam and Joanna Lenko competed from 2000 to 2008. They received instruction at the Mariposa School of Skating from David, Islam’s father, who serves as the facility’s Director of Ice Dance.
Debbie, his mother, used to compete in women’s singles skating. She took home the junior and senior bronze medals for Canada. She served on the judging panel for the men’s event at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and is also a figure skating judge.
Mitchell Islam and Alexandra Paul, a fellow skater at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario, had a successful tryout in February 2009. The 2009–2010 season marked the start of the pair’s joint competition. At the 2010 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championship, they took home a silver medal.
Throughout their senior careers, they also won the bronze medal at the Canadian national championships in 2011, 2014, and 2015. The pair also took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where they competed. In the mixed ice dance competition, they placed 18th.
After winning the bronze medal at US Classic International in 2016, The Paid announced their retirement from figure skating.
In 2021, the couple got hitched. In 2022, Paul gave birth to their son Charlie.
