French minister Marlene Schiappa has faced criticism from members of her own party as a result of appearing on the cover of Playboy magazine.
Schiappa gave the magazine a 12-page interview about women’s and LGBT rights and additionally graced the cover wearing a white dress. Since 2017, Schiappa has served as the government’s Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations.
Schiappa has received criticism from Schiappa’s fellow party member and French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne for appearing on the cover. It “wasn’t appropriate, especially during this period,” Borne remarked to the woman.
In a tweet on Saturday, Schiappa, a well-known longtime supporter of women’s rights, defended her choice, writing: “Defending the right of women to have control of their bodies, that’s everywhere and all the time. Women are free in France. Sincere apologies to the critics and hypocrites.
Schiappa and Cédric Bruguière are wed.
