On Wednesday while reciting verses from the Bible, a man in the San Francisco Bay Area fatally stabbed a woman. The authorities claim that after the murder, he posted a video of it to Facebook.
A caller who claimed to have seen a video of the horrifying crime online initially alerted the Nye County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada to the horrific incident. With the aid of the video, authorities were able to find the offender, who was later identified as Mark Mechikoff, 39.
When Ryan Lenahan watched the video, he claimed to have known Mechikoff since he was a young child.
Lenahan stated, “There was someone bleeding out, and [he] was standing over the person, repeating Bible verses and other kinds of incoherent nonsense.” He added that he messaged the suspect and posted a comment on the video calling him “sick” and saying, “Bro your [sic] disgusting I hope they have you in custody.”
The prosecution had identified the victim as 41-year-old Claribel Estrella. Estrella knew Mechikoff, according to the police, but the details of their acquaintance are murky, and the district attorney asserted that they are still investigating the murder’s motive.
The victim’s body was found in an apartment building in San Mateo, about 30 miles south of where Mechikoff was arrested. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that Mechikoff had been charged with one count of murder as well as using a knife and inflicting serious bodily harm.
In spite of appearing in court, he said nothing. His arraignment was postponed for a week, according to District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe, because the choice of his court-appointed lawyer is still pending.
Mechikoff has a criminal history, according to The Gainesville Sun, including pulling a knife on a woman in 2019. Mechikoff is currently detained in the Maguire Correctional Facility without posting bail. Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has taken down the video.
