Prosecutors stated that convicted serial murderer John Arthur Getreu, who terrorised Stanford University in the 1970s, was sentenced to seven years to life in prison for a second homicide on campus.
He will not be eligible for release until at least 2031.
According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Getreu was sentenced to life in prison with the chance of release in seven years for the 1973 murder of 21-year-old Leslie Perlov.
Getreu pled guilty to the murder of Perlov, the university’s law librarian, in January.
Leslie Perlov, 21, was discovered dead in hills overlooking Stanford University on February 16, 1973. A flowery scarf was firmly wrapped around her neck and used as a ligature to choke her to death, according to NewsNation station KRON.
Getreu was previously convicted in the 1974 murder of Janet Taylor, a 21-year-old woman. Getreu was also convicted in the rape and strangling death of 15-year-old Margaret Williams in Germany in 1964.
Diane Perlov, Leslie Perlov’s sister, talked with NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield about her thoughts on the case.
“I’m feeling relief with the sentencing, but I’ll know I’m done when I know he doesn’t ever get out on parole,” Perlov said during an appearance Friday night on NewsNation’s “Banfield.”
