Tyre Nichols’ brother expressed his desire for the Memphis police officers who beat him to death to also perish.
“You want my truth?… I hope they die,” Jamal Dupree, who lives in Sacramento, told FOX 40 News after Tennessee prosecutors announced the charges against the five recently-fired officers.
On Thursday, a grand jury indicted and detained Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Demond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith in connection with the killing of Nichols on January 10.
Each was accused with seven offences, including two charges each of aggravated kidnapping and official misconduct, as well as one count each of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and official oppression. By Friday morning, they had all gotten along.
“It doesn’t really mean nothing at this time until they’re actually found guilty for the actual charges,” added Dupree. “There’s a good chance they can walk free from this.”
The dying words of his brother, according to Dupree, “screamed for” his mother, “and they didn’t care.” Before Memphis police revealed the terrifying bodycam video of Nichols’ beating on Friday, he made these remarks.
The horrifying body camera footage showed Nichols being pepper sprayed, Tasered, and pummelling by several police officers during a traffic check.
The five black cops try to hold the FedEx employee, who had no prior encounters with the police, but he escapes before they can put him in handcuffs, setting off a second altercation in which they kick, club, and beat him. He can be heard saying he “didn’t do anything” in the horrifying video.
The second incident, which happened about 100 yards from his house, included a black 29-year-old father who screamed “Mom!” repeatedly as police tried to handcuff him.
In pain, Nichols screams “alright” and looks to give up as the police handcuff and pin him to the ground. Three days after his injuries, Nichols passed away.
