Wendie Renard’s last-second header gave France’s Women’s World Cup team their first victory in Group F as they defeated Brazil 2-1 on Saturday at Lang Park in Brisbane.
The defender responded to Selma Bacha’s corner last Sunday with a strong downward header that rebounded up off the field and past goalkeeper Leticia to give the French all three points after the team had started the season with a 0-0 draw against Jamaica.
Brazil, who began the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Panama, is now one point ahead of France with four points after their first two games. Herve Renard, the team’s manager, made history by becoming the first coach to triumph in both a Men’s and Women’s World Cup game.
