The Richard family experienced tragedy in 2013 after one of their own perished in the Boston Marathon bombings.
A team of 50 runners will compete in the 127th race in memory of the one they lost now, 10 years later.
Who is Henry Richard? Boston Marathon runner
A 20-year-old runner from Boston, Massachusetts named Henry Richard.
In 2022, he finished his first Boston Marathon, and in 2023, he will run it again in memory of his brother Martin Richard, who passed away in the domestic terrorist attack of 2013.
“I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to run alongside some of my best friends, people I consider family,” Henry told ABC affiliate WCVB.
Team MR8, which represents The Martin Richard Foundation, will be led by Henry.
An 8-year-old sports fanatic named Martin Richard was watching the 2013 Boston Marathon with his family.
When a pipe bomb set by the Tsarnaev brothers, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan, exploded, he was standing close to the finish line.
The youngest of the three victims was Martin. More than 250 others were also hurt by the blasts, and 17 individuals lost limbs, including his 7-year-old sister Jane, who lost her left leg.
Jane, who is now a teen, penned a heartfelt remembrance of her brother on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings.
“Ten years ago today my best friend died,” she wrote, via Boston25News.
“He was kind, and loving, and smile his way through every inconvenience. Unlike most older siblings, he was the kind of brother that would dance and sing, and put up with any of my antics. We played street hockey and swam at the lake. Simply put, he was the kind of kid you wanted to be around,” she added.
“Just weeks before his passing I remember cheering on the bruins, and him comforting me when they didn’t make it through the playoffs.
“He could make you smile with the snap of his fingers and I miss that so much. over the years he’s become a sort of brand of courage and kindness but truth be told if he saw me writing this right now he would say ‘jane stop crying at your phone you look dumb.’
“I miss Martin, I miss my best friend. I love you kid, never stop smiling,” she added.
Martin Richard’s father, Bill Richard, revealed the “really crappy hand” his family was dealt in an interview with SportsCenter. He also mentioned that he had lost some hearing and that his wife, Denise Richard, had also lost eyesight in one eye.
