The Metropolitan Police have issued an arrest warrant for FAROUK Abdulhak in connection with the 2008 murder of Norwegian student Martine Vik Magnussen.
Here, we look at what he is suspected of doing and what developments have occurred in the case.
Who is Farouk Abdulhak?
Farouk Abdulhak attended Regent’s Business School in London.
On March 14, 2008, he is accused of murdering Norwegian student Martine Vik Magnussen.
Abdulhak was seen on CCTV leaving Mayfair’s Maddox nightclub with Martine and getting into a taxi with her.
Martine was overjoyed to have finished first in her class after receiving her exam results.
It is believed that the two of them once had a romantic relationship.
Martine was discovered dead in the basement of a block of flats on Great Portland Street in London on March 16, 2008.
Abdulhak was a resident of the building at the time, but fled to Yemen via Egypt shortly after.
Her body was partially covered in rubble, and she was missing jewellery and shoes that she had worn the night before.
A post-mortem examination revealed that she died as a result of strangulation. It was also discovered that she had been raped.
A woman in her 60s was arrested on the charge of assisting an offender in March 2022, which was thought to be a breakthrough in the case.
The Metropolitan Police Department encouraged Abdulhak to return to the United Kingdom for questioning.
This is complicated by the fact that the UK and Yemen do not have an extradition treaty.
Who is Farouk’s father Shaher Abdulhak?
His father, Yemeni businessman Shaher Abdulhak, was known as the “King of sugar” in his home country.
In 1963, Abdulhak established Shaher Trading, which was involved in petroleum, soft drinks, tourism, and real estate.
He was known as one of Yemen’s wealthiest businessmen and wielded considerable political power.
He was known to be camera-shy and rarely appeared in public.
In 2009, a Norwegian news outlet published the first image of him.
