One of about a dozen candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 is North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, age 66. Burgum is a software entrepreneur who helped found Great Plains Software in the 1980s. In 1997, Microsoft bought Great Plains Software for $1.1 billion. His presidential ambitions are supported by a $10.2 million personal loan, with the majority of his campaign’s funding coming from himself.
Burgum entered politics in 2016 as a gubernatorial candidate and finished as a significant underdog. Taking advantage of his outsider status in the same year that Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination, he won the GOP primary with a 20% margin of victory.
In his campaign, he has embraced important issues like signing one of the nation’s strictest anti-abortion laws and emphasizing conservative energy policies. As governor, he emphasized the use of cutting-edge technology to capture carbon emissions rather than relying on strict regulations on fossil fuels, and he set an ambitious goal for North Dakota to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
