One of about a dozen candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 is North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, age 66. Burgum has used innovative strategies to gain attention and qualify for the upcoming GOP debate in Milwaukee on August 23, despite his lack of name recognition and reputation as a longshot candidate.
Burgum is a software entrepreneur who helped found Great Plains Software in the 1980s. In 1997, Microsoft bought Great Plains Software for $1.1 billion. His presidential ambitions are supported by a $10.2 million personal loan, with the majority of his campaign’s funding coming from himself.
Burgum entered politics in 2016 as a gubernatorial candidate and finished as a significant underdog. Taking advantage of his outsider status in the same year that Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination, he won the GOP primary with a 20% margin of victory.
In his campaign, he has embraced important issues like signing one of the nation’s strictest anti-abortion laws and emphasizing conservative energy policies. As governor, he emphasized the use of cutting-edge technology to capture carbon emissions rather than relying on strict regulations on fossil fuels, and he set an ambitious goal for North Dakota to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

From a foreign policy perspective, Burgum sees China as the United States’ main foe in the twenty-first century. He believes that the United States and China are involved in a cold war that calls for an economic victory. He stresses the close ties between the two economies while acknowledging the value of continuing the dialogue and upholding American values.
