The owner of the famous Maui red-roofed house that withstood the wildfires is Dora Atwater Millikin. The internet was captivated by the captivating images of this uninhabited property, which also sparked crazy theories about laser attacks from space. The renowned house’s owner, Dora Atwater Millikin, has revealed that a number of understated changes contributed to its miraculous survival.

The red-roofed house, which stood as an oasis amidst the rubble, attracted attention on a global scale as a sign of hope in the midst of tragedy. However, Dora Atwater Millikin, the home’s owner, provided insight into the subtle changes that most likely helped the house survive. Conspiracy theories abounded, attributing the untouched state to bizarre causes.

Dora Atwater Millikin, who is she?

Landscape painter Dora Atwater Millikin described how she and her husband Dudley renovated the 100-year-old home they have owned for three years. Rather than protecting the structure from a catastrophe like a wildfire, their goal was to respect the building’s history.

Unknowingly, one significant change made during the restoration increased the house’s chances of withstanding the raging inferno. It turned out to be crucial to replace the asphalt roof with a heavy-gauge metal roof. Unknowingly, the material selection protected the home from flaming debris carried by the wind, which could ignite conventional asphalt roofs and cause more damage.

Another unintentional precaution was the covering of the ground with stones up to the drip line of the roof, along with the removal of flammable vegetation close to the exterior walls. Although intended to control termites, these actions unintentionally complied with professional advice to reduce the risk of fire.

Inadvertently, the red-roofed house’s advantageous location by the ocean, a road, and an empty lot served to its advantage. The house stood away from the main fire because there was room between it and the nearby homes, which are a major source of fuel for wildfires. Power outages rendered the sprinklers ineffective, but the house’s under-deck area was free of combustibles, adding an additional layer of safety.

Experts stressed that embers, as opposed to walls of flame, are frequently where the real danger lies, dispelling myths and theories about the destruction’s selectivity.

In addition to starting over, Dora Atwater Millikin and her husband want to show their neighbors who have lost their homes compassion. They emphasize the need for cooperation during these trying times as they embrace the shared responsibility of recovery and reconstruction.
