Cooper Flagg, one of the top high school basketball prospects, announced on Friday that he had moved up to the class of 2024.
Cooper Flagg: Who is he?
Flagg, a 6-foot-8 forward from Newport, Maine, was a top-three recruit in the 2025 class and is now vying for first place in the 2024 class with guards Dylan Harper and Tre Johnson.
Following Flagg’s victory in the Nike EYBL 16-under tournament in May, rumors of his reclassification in the AAU started to spread. Flagg, a player for Maine United, has been on NBA scouts’ radar since he first appeared on the scene last summer. He was the first player in an EYBL game to reach 50 points or more in April.
Flagg had a successful final AAU basketball season, averaging 25.4 points, 13 rebounds, 6.8 blocks, and 5.7 assists per game during Nike’s Peach Jam. He participated in the SC Select camp for Stephen Curry, the Jordan Brand camp for Jayson Tatum, and is currently in Oregon for the Nike Skills Academy. He was chosen as the NBPA Top 100 Camp MVP.
Flagg recently visited Duke, which is thought to be the favorite to sign the five-star recruit. Other participating schools include UConn, Kansas, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, Villanova, and West Virginia.
As a result of Maine United’s success at Peach Jam, where he averaged 15 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists as they advanced to the playoffs, Ace Flagg, Flagg’s twin, had a fantastic summer and his recruiting has increased.
Playing together is fantastic, Ace Flagg told Yahoo Sports. “Obviously, we get along well on the court, so it’s simple to play with him, and I always know where he wants the ball, and vice versa. We grew up in a competitive environment, which has only helped us both become better players.
Cooper is the early favorite to be selected with the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft because scouts have prioritized him over the past two years. He won’t have to play two years of college basketball because he was born on December 21 and will be able to enter the NBA Draft at the age of 16. Flagg is the top rim protector in high school basketball, regardless of class. Additionally, he has a natural feel for the game, and over the summer, he improved his 3-point shooting.
During his senior year, Flagg will play on a dominant Montverde Academy team with Asa Newell, Liam McNeeley, Derik Queen, Rob Wright III, a Baylor recruit named Curtis Givens III, and other top high school athletes from the 2024 high school class.
