The Arizona Cardinals’ decision to release Colt McCoy on Monday shocked the football world.
The Cardinals were without their starting quarterback for at least the first four games of the season when the decision was made, according to reports that Kyler Murray will remain on the PUP list.
In the team’s season opener at FedEx Field against the Washington Commanders, McCoy and rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune were considered the favorites. McCoy was mostly in the starting lineup for both the preseason games and training camp.
McCoy reportedly struggled during the team’s joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings despite only having 12 throw attempts in the preseason.
Josh Dobbs, who was recently acquired, will now face off against Tune for the starting spot. Despite Cardinals head coach Gannon’s assertion that they wouldn’t name a starter because they had a “competitive advantage,” it appears they already have a candidate in mind.
“I believe we have a strategy in place, but I still want to watch them both play football. We have some work this week and more the following week, but I feel good about where we are right now.
On September 10, the Cardinals play the Washington Redskins.
