Christine Ko wil star in the fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel. Season five of the dystopian drama will stream on Hulu from September 14, 2022.
During the Second American Civil War, a totalitarian regime named the Republic of Gilead overthrew the US government and forced its fertile women, commonly known as Handmaids, into child-bearing enslavement. This is the setting for the dystopian American television series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Similar to its roots, the series addresses the issues of oppressed women in patriarchal settings and their struggle for freedom from enslavement.

Ko, who portrayed Mandi in Prime Video’s Upload, will take on the role of Lily, a former Martha who is now a leader in the resistance organisation located in Canada.

Actress Christine Ko, who is Taiwanese-American, will play Lily in season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale, an acclaimed Hulu series. Ko is well-known for her appearances on series such as Dave, The Great Indoors, and Upload.
Ko briefly worked as an actor in Taiwan before launching a career there. She is the daughter of the late Taiwanese entertainer Frankie Kao and was born in Chicago. Ko, however, was brought up in Georgia by her aunt and uncle.
Ko went to Taiwan at their advice in order to give the local industry a chance. She stated in an interview with NBC,
“It was difficult for me because I had to act in Mandarin. Even though I spoke Mandarin at home, I had to pick up the language half way.”
In search of greater opportunities, Ko came back to America and lived in Los Angeles. She was typecast, though, and required to adopt an Asian accent during her auditions, which she found challenging given that she was raised in the US.
After appearing on and then becoming a regular on the CBS programme The Great Indoors, Ko rose to notoriety in 2016. Additionally, she appeared as a guest star in the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building and the HBO comedy Ballers. She also contributed to the 2020 Tigertail Netflix movie.
Ko appeared in Justin Bieber’s music video for the song Hold On in 2021.
