Beverly Crowl, 69, was a beloved former police clerk who was known as the mother hen of the local Independence, Missouri, police force.
As police investigated, they linked her death to a group of individuals who were members of a local gang, which is all revealed in the latest season of Netflix’s I Am a Killer.
Who is Anthony Standifer?
Anthony Standifer is accused of being the leader of the group that broke into Beverly Crowl’s home.
He was bounced between family members and foster care before joining the Kansas City Crips gang at the age of 14.
Standifer claims that his mother was unable to care for him owing to her substance misuse, and that his father never claimed him as his son.
This is a tragedy in and of itself, but joining a gang resulted in disaster for more than simply Standifer.
What happened to Beverly Crowl?
On March 19, 2010, the group’s mission was not to break into Crowl’s house.
They intended to rob an accused local drug dealer of $70,000 in cash and 15 pounds of marijuana.
The men arrived in Crowl’s area, unsure whether house belonged to the drug dealer, a blunder that would cost her life.
Beverly and the drug dealer had similar cars, which led the men to her front door.
Beverly contacted her twin sister, horrified, while the mob hammered on the door.
Beverly’s final phone call came as the front door was bashed in and she began pleading for her life.
Because she lived alone and was retired, there weren’t many valuable objects in the house for the men to steal.
Standifer was on probation when she decided Beverly needed to die since she had seen their faces.
Beverly looked to have been shot execution-style, according to police reports.
When police learned that a local gang was planning to rob a drug dealer, they were able to piece the story together.
They linked the drug dealer’s address to Beverly’s, and the dominoes started falling from there.
Standifer was questioned and initially claimed innocence before admitting to killing the former clerk.
Where is Anthony Standifer today?
Standifer was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal conduct.
He was indicted and condemned to two life sentences plus 60 years in jail.
This means he will never be eligible for parole and will be imprisoned for the rest of his life at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston, Missouri.
