A petition has been signed by over 14,000 individuals urging New Mexico State University to remove Alexee Trevizo, the teen accused of killing her newborn kid and disposing of his body in a hospital rubbish can.
According to KFOX14/KDBC, the appeal came only days after a court reduced Trevizo’s bail conditions to allow her to attend the university in person ahead of an October trial.
Trevizo, 19, was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in May after police said she secretly delivered her newborn son at Artesia General Hospital.
After being approached by medics, she allegedly admitted committing the unfathomable crime and apologized.
“I’m sorry. It came out of me and I didn’t know what to do,” she allegedly said, according to security footage of the examination room where she had been admitted, purportedly for back pain.
The online petition urged “authorities and educational institutions to take immediate action to prevent Alexee Trevizo from pursuing a career in nursing, social work, or any field of education,” but did not provide evidence that the suspected killer was pursuing those disciplines.
“We believe that her recent actions, which include being charged with the murder of her newborn baby by throwing the infant into a trash can, demonstrate an alarming lack of empathy and disregard for human life,” read the petition, started Thursday by Evelyn Grasiano.
“Allowing someone who has been involved in such a heinous crime to pursue an education, especially one that involves caring for others is not only morally wrong but also poses significant risks to potential patients or clients,” it continued.
“By denying Alexee Trevizo entry into New Mexico State University (NMSU) or any other educational institution within our state, we can prioritize both public safety and ethical standards.”
Trevizo had mostly denied being pregnant, blaming her weight gain on birth control tablets, according to classmates last month.
According to the outlet, she had revealed to several that she was pregnant, even telling them she planned to name the child Alex.
Trevizo claimed the baby was stillborn after locking herself in the hospital restroom to deliver and allegedly kill the infant, but medical examiners deemed the death a homicide.
Her lawyer has claimed that the hospital was to blame for the baby’s death, claiming that personnel administered medicines to the girl, including morphine, which killed the newborn before birth.
Trevizo could face life in jail if convicted.
