The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California will host the second Republican primary debate on September 27.

The qualifications for presidential candidates seeking to take part in the party’s second authorized debate have undergone significant changes, according to the Republican National Committee (RNC). This debate, which is slated for September 27 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, may alter the primary field by reducing the number of candidates participating.

Candidates vying for a spot in the second debate must achieve higher polling thresholds than the first one, according to the updated criteria that will be revealed on Tuesday. They must obtain at least 3% in two national polls or 3% in one national poll and 3% in two polls conducted in the early nominating states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada.

The new polling requirements are higher than those for the first debate, when candidates had to receive at least 1% in three national polls or 1% in two national polls and 1% in two early-state polls in order to be eligible. Additionally, only polls with sizable sample sizes and those conducted by companies unconnected to any of the candidates will be taken into account by the RNC.

In addition, the committee increased the fundraising requirement for candidates who want to take part in the second debate. Each candidate must now have a minimum of 50,000 distinct donors, 200 of whom must come from at least 20 different states or territories. At least 48 hours before the debate, this fundraising goal must be met.

The first debate’s requirements, which stipulated that candidates must have 40,000 unique donors and 200 unique donors in each of at least 20 states and/or territories, have been replaced by the ones listed here.

Former President Donald Trump, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley are among the qualified candidates for the first debate, which is scheduled for August 23 in Milwaukee. Asa Hutchinson, a former governor of Arkansas, and former vice president Mike Pence met the polling requirement but fell short of the fundraising requirement.

Similar to the first debate, candidates who take part in the second debate must sign a number of oaths, including supporting the eventual Republican Party nominee and refraining from speaking at unofficial debates not sanctioned by the RNC.

While Fox News Channel will air the first debate, the media partner for the second debate has not yet been revealed. The second Republican primary debate is anticipated to be a pivotal moment in the 2023 primary season, narrowing the field and determining the course of the race in light of these new thresholds and requirements.
