Following the quick addition of the HD image option, WhatsApp has now made it possible to send and receive HD videos as well, something that other apps have been able to do for a very long time. Better late than never, though.
Just last week, WhatsApp made the decision to enable support for high-resolution images, and at the same time, the company revealed that HD videos would soon be available as well. It is now at last fulfilling that promise.
As usual, the rollout will be staged, so it will take some time for it to reach some parts of the world. However, we can confirm that Pakistan already offers the HD video option.
You can now choose 720p video quality when sending a clip, an improvement over the pre-set 480p option. It functions in the same way as pictures. There is now an HD button above the clip, next to all the editing options, when sending a video on WhatsApp.
High-definition videos do not significantly alter size or quality, in contrast to HD photos, but they are at least marginally better. For instance, when using the HD option, a 2MB video will only increase to a maximum of 3.8MB.
HD videos on WhatsApp are protected by end-to-end encryption, just like HD images and every other type of media on the service. For viewers of HD videos, a noticeable HD badge will be visible next to the content to indicate its improved quality.
