On the beta versions of the Android and iOS apps, WhatsApp has started experimenting with the ability to edit messages. The messaging service, which is owned by Meta, is currently testing message editing on both its web interface and mobile apps; testing for the latter started last week. Text message changes can be made by users who have subscribed to the beta channel on iOS and Android within a set time frame. This feature, along with other beta features like the ability to block unknown callers, is anticipated to be made available to all WhatsApp users in the upcoming weeks.
The messaging service has made the message editing feature available on WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.23.10.13 and WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 23.10.0.70, reports WABetaInfo, a well-known feature tracker.
A new Edit message option should be available via the three-dot menu (Android) and the long-press menu (iOS) for users who have installed or updated to these builds via the beta testing channels on Google Play and Apple’s TestFlight. This is comparable to the most recent WhatsApp Web beta update that added message editing capabilities.
WhatsApp has set a 15-minute time limit on message editing across all three platforms — iOS, Android, and the web. The same time restriction is applied by Apple to texts sent through the Messages app. However, WhatsApp doesn’t seem to have any restrictions on the number of times a message can be changed, within the time limit, whereas you can only edit an iMessage text up to five times.
There is no information from the company regarding when it plans to make the feature available to all users on the stable release channel, despite the fact that editing text messages on WhatsApp is currently available for beta testing on Android, iOS, and the Web. Along with other testing features, it might be made available to users in the upcoming weeks. One of these features is the ability to block unknown callers, which is probably intended to combat the rise in spam and scam calls on the messaging service.
